A two-week marine survey conducted by scientists with Conservation International (CI) in Indonesia, along with local partners, led to the discovery of eight potentially new species of fish and a potentially new species of coral in the waters surrounding Bali island.

The team observed that commercially important reef fish were severely depleted. In over 350 man-hours of diving, the team observed a total of three reef sharks and three Napoleon wrasse – a stark contrast with a healthy reef system where a diver would expect to encounter this number of large reef predators in a single dive

Jim Corbett National Park is the oldest National park of India, established in 1936, as the Hailey National Park. In 1956, the name of the park was changed to Jim Corbett National Park, in honour of Jim Corbett, the hunter who turned into a famous conservationist and Author, playing a crucial role in the establishment of this park.

The Corbett National park is located in Nainital district of Uttarakhand and attracts huge amount of visitors each year.

The National park is located in the mountainous region of the Shivaliks and outer Himalayas and consists of mountains, grasslands, lake, river side beds and marshes. The Ramganga River flows from east to west of the park, creating a breathtaking site and an ideal place to spot animals.

The present area of the Reserve is 1318.54 sq. km. including 520 sq. km. of core area and 797.72 sq. km. of buffer area. The core area forms the Jim Corbett National Park while the buffer contains reserve forests (496.54 sq.km.) as well as the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary (301.18 sq.km.)

Tourism:
Jim Corbett National Park is a very famous national park and attracts thousands of tourists from across the globe. This tourism, however, has disturbed the natural habitat of the animal species living there. The park is thus divided into the core area and buffer area. Buffer area is the outer area where tourists can visit and the core area is the undisturbed area where no human activity is allowed.

Ecotourism:

The government of India has started, what is called as eco tourism, a well structured guide that instructs tourists as well as locals as to how they can avoid damaging the environment and protect the park while travelling/living here.

Project Tiger: The Government of India’s ambitious project tiger was also started here as the highly endangered Bengal Tiger resides here.

Things to do:

  • Take an elephant safari
  • Take a jeep safari
  • Visit the Corbett museum

Location:

The Jim Corbett National Park is reached easily through Ramnagar, from where jeeps are available to the National park.

Airport: The nearest airport from Ramnagar is Pant Nagar at a distance of 80 kilometres.
Rail: The nearest railway station is at Ramnagar.
People tend to have this assumption that luxury is all about air-conditioning and technology, about owning a big car — but luxury can also be about feeling the wind blow right through your house, being in contact with nature and walking around barefoot in your home.

Effan Adhiwira, a 28-year-old Indonesian who is senior architect and also oversees construction at Green School, the Ibuku team is creating a collection of structures that look more like treehouses and pirate ships than luxury villas.

Three dozen buildings will ultimately form the “Green Village,” which is going up on three hectares, or almost 7.5 acres, of land. One has been completed, and its owner is moving in next week. A second is expected to be finished in a few weeks and several more in the next few months. Five homes have been sold already and the sales of at least four more are being negotiated.

Each one boggles the mind, pleasantly, doing things with bamboo that you would never think bamboo could do.

Indonesia as a whole, and Bali in particular, has become increasingly popular with foreign investors, drawn by the country’s friendly climate and buoyant economy. Foreigners cannot own land or houses directly in their own name in the country but it is possible, and common, for them to arrange ownership through local nominees or surrogates. Another option is to acquire long-term leases of as long as 25 years, which can be transferable and extendable, and are thus an attractive alternative, Mr. Wrathall said.

Possibly the most unusual aspect of the Ibuku houses — apart from the fact that they are 98 percent bamboo — is that their sides are largely open to the elements.

Beneath the canopy-like roofs, which are in turn overshadowed by the jungle, there are only floors and the bamboo support pillars. The houses have 150 to 300 square meters, or 1,615 to 3,230 square feet, of living space, but no walls, no windows.

That may sound unbearably hot and steamy, but there generally is a gentle breeze blowing through the structures.

Buyers can opt to have parts of their houses enclosed — with bamboo walls — so the areas can be cooled and dehumidified. But most areas are free of energy-guzzling air-conditioning and costly insulation materials. Ibuku also plans to take the whole “village” off Bali’s electric grid, providing power from biomass, the energy given off by decaying natural materials — all in line with the green, environmentalist philosophy that pervades the development.
The list of the Seven Wonders of the World has changed many times over the years, and often Borobudur has been included. UNESCO added the monument to its list of World Heritage Sites in 1991, and has been of great influence in restoring the monument to its former glory.

Borobudur temple is built to represent many layers of Buddhist theory. From a birds eye view, the temple is in the shape of a traditional Buddhist mandala. A mandala is central to a great deal of Buddhist and Hindu art, the basic form of most Hindu and Buddhist mandalas is a square with four entry points, and a circular centre point. Working from the exterior to the interior, three zones of consciousness are represented, with the central sphere representing unconsciousness or Nirvana.
